Crank flashlights are a great way to get light when you need it without batteries

It is always handy to have a flashlight around the house in case of storms and power outages. However, having one around and ready for use also means having fresh batteries around too. Unfortunately, batteries can be expensive and are very toxic to the environment if not disposed of properly. So, how can you have a flashlight available for emergencies and not have to worry about batteries?

The answer is crank flashlights. These handy products give you a flashlight to use at any time, in any place. All you have to do is crank the lever for half a minute or so to get an hour of flashlight use.

Crank flashlights work because they have a small generator in them. However, instead of the generator being supplied power by batteries or some other fuel, it is powered by manual cranking of the arm on the flashlight. When you crank the arm of the flashlight, it moves a wire coil through a magnetic field, which generates power and lights the flashlight. Crank flashlights can retain the power you generate for use later because they contain rechargeable battery cells that hold the power you create from cranking the arm of the flashlight.

While it is way cool that you can provide the power for your flashlight from your own energy, it is even cooler that crank flashlights are so cheap. Crank flashlights start at around $6, which is much cheaper than what you have to pay to if you buy normal, battery-powered flashlights. Also, because crank flashlights use your own energy, you don’t have to keep buying batteries or worry about having rechargeable batteries charged up to use, which saves you even more money.

A couple of years ago, I bought myself and every member of my family crank flashlights for the Holidays. It was a great present. I keep one in the house and one in the car. Whenever I need a flashlight, I just crank it up a few times with my hand and, voila, I have light!
